Actually, I want to do the same thing.  I tried today with an internal sata ssd and got a kernel error.  Of course I was using a desktop with an Asus P5Q board and there are issues.  In fact I could not install the Endian software with a sata drive and had to replace it with an IDE.  Here is an idea perhaps an IDE flash drive might work.  Check http://ec.transcendusa.com/product/product_memory.asp?chtype=IDE%20Flash%20Modules&Cid=59&indexnum=9&exid=2&gclid=CNfNxueli5sCFQ_yDAodQzOppg

If you want portability - that is another thing.
