Upgraded to dual CPU. New Kernel needed?

Hello group,
I just upgraded a endian box with a second CPU (now it has 2x Intel Celeron 500 on a ABIT BP6 motherboard).
The current kernel loaded is 2.6.9-55.EL.endian19
Do I have to make any changes to support the second CPU, e.g. by loading an SMP-kernel?
When I launch "top" it shows only the load of "CPU(s)". But when I press "1", it shows only the load of "CPU 0", while the man page of top says it should then show the load for all CPUs seperately. With other words I was expecting also an indication of the load of "CPU 1".
Could it be that my current kernel ignores the second CPU?!
thanx for any advice,
tom
