Title: INIT: Id "s0" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes.
Post by: necomputer on Sunday 12 July 2009, 08:26:49 am
I have tried to install endian on a new E-machines ET1810-01 Intel Celeron 420, 2Gb Ram, 160Gb Hard Drive. The install runs ok with only one issue. The installer thinks that the system has two hard drives and asks if I want to RAID1 configure them. The system doesn't have two drives so I selected no.

The system finishes and reboots. The system then hangs at loading GRUB.... press any key to continue.... press any key to continue. After sitting there for about 5 the system then gets to the screen and the system is fully operational.

My concern is that the screen states INIT: Id "s0" respawning too fast: disabled for 5 minutes. What does this mean? What is this doing to the system? How do I fix this?

Any support would be well appreciated. Someone else had this same problem but there is no responses to his request... I am hoping I have better luck :)     http://efwsupport.com/index.php?topic=114.msg200#msg200 (http://efwsupport.com/index.php?topic=114.msg200#msg200)

Nothing like solving my own problem! :) However, because I believe in open source and helping out when possible I will post my findings.

INIT stands for inittab. "s0" is the device that is having problems or causing problems. In this case "s0" is Serial Port 0.

My problem was that I activated the serial port for accessing the appliance however the system I installed doesn't have a serial port. Now one would say why would I have activated such a function, knowing I don't have the port. Well I was hoping to connect up a usb to serial adapter to do this but realize that this would be worth it. There would probably be problems with drivers or unsupported.

I reinstalled the system without serial support and the system runs great!

I had the same problem. I turned on the serial port in the install assuming the machine had one, but it didn't. I reinstalled w/ that option turned off and it works fine now. Thanks :)
