Installation Fails - Could not install packages

I'm a new Endian user. I had no difficulty installing the latest version of IPCop. I attempted to install EF 2.3 without success. I follow the default installation process (don't add any packages) and I'm getting "Could not install packages" just before grub installs. Sometimes the system ( IBM ThinkCentre M52 128MB Memory) reboots after the error in which case I start again. Other times I get to define the green zone. When I define the green zone I do not get the userid/pw prompts like I do with IPCop. The machine reboots and I get the menu prompt. However I cannot do anything because I don't know any passwords (root or admin).
Any assistance appreciated!
Jim
