Outgoing mail on port 587 and 465

Hey Guys
So im very new to endian firewall - have worked with it a bit and have a general understanding of firewalls. The problem i have is the following.
I am trying to set up my clients to use authenticated smtp on port 587 or 465 (pop accounts)
When i do a test account settings it completes, so i dont think the ports are being blocked, but as soon as i try and send a mail it just hangs in the outbox and never leaves.
I have allowed the ports in the firewall under outgoing traffic.
Is there anything I am missing? perhaps i need to do something to allow authentication? maybe its not the ports thats the issue but the authentication?
any help would be appreciated

Normally there is nothing else to do.
I have ports TCP/25 and TCP/587 opened in firewall / Outgoing traffic and it works perfectly with Thunderbird. There is nothing else I have done.
If you are using Yahoo, I heard there was another port to use because they use a non standard port.
