Hi,

I have tried to find a howto, for using EFW as a file server as well. I have only one box, and need to use it for both a gateway/firewall (EFW is perfect here) and as a file server on my LAN, and SAMBA is perfect here?

Please either point me to an existing post that gives step by step instructions, or kindly provide such.

Thank you

Marc

EFW can be great as a firewall, but there is no support as a file server.
You should do all the changes by yourself, at command line.

Maybe you need another solution, as ClearOS. It's is aimed as an all-in-one SMB solution.
The drawbacks are that it isn't really free, annual costs to have a similar firewall to EFW are high:

Once polished, I still think that the best free opensource firewall/gateway is Endian Firewall.

basicly, efw has samba executable, just need manual setting in /etc/samba/smb.conf and check startup at /etc/rc.d/start
It tested by me in SHARE mod, auth I haven't tested, but you can try and share your experience :-)

Hi,

Thanks to all for the replies.
mrkroket: I know about ClearOS, and was recently using it, but the new version, still in BETA 2, does not have samba..... and the costs, as you mentioned.

I did use EFW previously, but then and a few boxes at my disposal, so i set up Endian on one 1U server as a firewall, and put VMWARE ESXi on the other two to do my file server, mail server, etc. Now, i only have one box, so was trying a few different options. ClearOS' proxy service is very slow, when compared to EFW, even running EFW as a VM on ESXi 5.0....

alex_t: I'm gonna try and do the manual config thing, and will let you know - gimme a few days. just got endian 2.4 loaded on ESXi 5.0. if i see that i can get it to work, i may then just put EFW on the box completely. will keep you posted.

regards

Marc
