Hello,

I've been using Endian Community edition for a few years now and always suffered with using the Legacy Hyper-V network adapter (only works at 10Mbits).

Thanks to this forum (50chickens) I have built a Hyper-V guest EFW 3.0 Community with a new kernel and support for full Hyper-V synthetic network drivers. i.e. maxing out my data centre connection.

I have created a factory default VHD which I will happily provide a download link.

Please reply to this thread if you wish to download a copy.

Configuration =
Hyper-V Guest
2 x vCPU Cores
2GB of RAM
100GB Dynamic VHD
2 x Network Adapter (NOT LEGACY)

Test Result:
w***w***w.speedtest.net/my-result/4024402569

Thanks,
Timmeh

Hi Timmeh,
I set your vhd up on Windows Server 2012 R2 and overall it works fine. I have a fairly complex setup with two Red interfaces, one Orange and multiple ipsec VPNs and firewall rules. Once I restored the backup from my old Endian box, it took a bit of fiddling to get all the interfaces back to the way they were, but once this was done, everything else worked fine.

A  of issues I noticed:

1. Rebooting the VM does not work. After the reboot, Endian hangs at 'Booting Endian Firewall Community release 3.0-devel (3.11.6)' with the cursor flashing underneath 'savedefault'. Powering off the VM and turning it back on works fine.

2. Your VHD is a Dynamically sized, would it be possible to get a static version, say 80GB?

3. Windows logs a number of errors for the network and disk drivers as Endian boots:

Networking driver in Endian 3.0 loaded but has a different version from the server. Server version 5.0  Client version 3.2 (Virtual machine ID 61641787-5979-400D-851C-5640B832EC3F). The device will work, but this is an unsupported configuration. This means that technical support will not be provided until this problem is resolved. To fix this problem, upgrade the integration services. To upgrade, connect to the virtual machine and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu.

A storage device in 'Endian 3.0' loaded but has a different version from the server.  Server version 6.0  Client version 5.1 (Virtual machine ID 61641787-5979-400D-851C-5640B832EC3F). The device will work, but this is an unsupported configuration. This means that technical support will not be provided until this problem is resolved. To fix this problem, upgrade the integration services. To upgrade, connect to the virtual machine and select Insert Integration Services Setup Disk from the Action menu.

I'm no Linux expert, so I don't know if these are significant.

Would it be possible for you to document the process involved in creating the VHD, I would certainly like to try this for myself if possible.

Many thanks for your work!

Pat

Hi Timmeh,
I set your vhd up on Windows Server 2012 R2 .....

Hello,

1. Rebooting from within Endian or from Hyper-V Manager? Have you tried both do they give same result? I generally don't reboot my gateway very often so wouldn't really have noticed the issue.

2. You can convert the VHD to fixed disk within Hyper-V.

3. The Hyper-V component services are built in to the kernel v3.11.6 which is an "older" kernel and I'm guessing released before 2012 R2. I will look to update them and investigate if the v5.0 Hyper-V components are available for linux.

4. The process is already documented by @50chickens on this forum. http://www.efwsupport.com/index.php?topic=3849.0

Thank you
